Peggy Wassi (c.1940–2022) was a respected Nyikina artist from the Fitzroy River region of Western Australia. Born on Luluigui Station, she spent her early years on Country, where she learned traditional knowledge, cultural practices and the importance of ceremony from her Elders while travelling through the region gathering bush foods and visiting family.
After living at Looma and later Derby, Peggy began painting later in life, becoming one of the few Nyikina artists to establish a significant painting practice. Her artworks reflect the landscapes, waterways and cultural traditions of her ancestral Country, expressing a deep connection to place and the stories passed down through generations.
Characterised by strong compositions and an authentic visual language, Peggy’s paintings celebrate the enduring relationship between the Nyikina people and the Fitzroy River. Her work has been exhibited across Australia and is represented in public and private collections, recognising her important contribution to contemporary Aboriginal art.
