Lloyd Kwilla is a Wangkajunga artist and respected cultural leader from the Great Sandy Desert in Western Australia. Raised near Halls Creek, he inherited important cultural responsibilities from his family, including custodianship of his ancestral Country around Kuylayi (Well 43) on the Canning Stock Route.

Kwilla began painting in 2000 after being encouraged by his father, the renowned lawman, healer and artist Billy Thomas, to continue sharing the stories and knowledge of their Country through art. His paintings explore themes including bushfires, waterholes, ancestral pathways and the interconnected relationship between people, land and ceremony.

Working with both natural ochres and acrylics, Kwilla has developed a distinctive style characterised by flowing forms, textured surfaces and earthy colour palettes. His compositions function as cultural maps, tracing the networks of sacred sites and traditional routes that cross the Great Sandy Desert while expressing the enduring significance of Country.

Lloyd Kwilla’s work has been exhibited extensively across Australia and internationally and is represented in significant public and private collections. He is recognised for combining strong cultural integrity with an evolving contemporary artistic practice, creating works that honour his heritage while continuing the traditions passed down through generations.
