Ngoia Pollard Napaltjarri (c.1948–2022) was a senior Warlpiri artist from Haasts Bluff in the Northern Territory. Raised in the Central Desert, she later lived in Kintore before settling at Mt Liebig, where she maintained a close connection to Country and traditional ways of life.
Beginning her painting career in 1997, Ngoia drew on the cultural knowledge and custodianship inherited through her family. Her work depicts her father’s Country around Nyirripi (Talarada), expressing important Warlpiri narratives associated with the Water Snake and the surrounding landscape of swamps, lakes and desert waterways.
Characterised by flowing organic forms, rhythmic patterning and subtle colour, her paintings evoke both the physical features and spiritual significance of Country. The recurring oval motifs represent waterholes and wetlands, while the interconnected designs reflect ancestral pathways and the enduring presence of Tjukurrpa (Dreaming).
Ngoia Pollard Napaltjarri exhibited widely throughout Australia and internationally, and her work is represented in significant public and private collections. She is remembered as an important Warlpiri artist whose paintings celebrate the enduring relationship between people, Country and ancestral law.
