Sarrita King is a contemporary Aboriginal artist whose vibrant paintings draw inspiration from the landscapes, seasons and stories of her Gurindji heritage. Based in Darwin, her work reflects a deep connection to Country and explores the movement, energy and changing rhythms of the Australian landscape through layered colour and intricate mark-making.

Art has been central to Sarrita’s life from an early age. She is the daughter of acclaimed Gurindji artist William King Jungala (1966–2007), whose teachings and cultural knowledge continue to influence her practice. Alongside her sister, Tarisse King, she carries forward her family’s artistic legacy while developing a distinctive visual language of her own.

Sarrita first gained national attention with her celebrated Lightning series, inspired by the dramatic storms of Northern Australia. Since then, her practice has expanded to encompass bodies of work exploring the wet and dry seasons, the elements, ancestral narratives and the shifting textures of Country. Her paintings combine contemporary abstraction with cultural storytelling, creating works that are both visually striking and deeply connected to place.

Working with richly layered surfaces and dynamic compositions, Sarrita’s paintings evoke the atmosphere and spirit of the landscape rather than depicting it literally. Her use of colour and rhythm captures the cycles of nature, reflecting themes of renewal, resilience and connection across generations.

Today, Sarrita King is recognised as one of Australia’s leading contemporary Indigenous artists. Her work is held in significant private and corporate collections both nationally and internationally, and she continues to produce major commissions and collaborative projects while living and working in Darwin.
