In keeping with the word’s original reference, ‘Boondocks’ is a fictional collection of remote rural vistas within the Australian landscape.
Whilst some may view these places as unfamiliar, rugged and lonely, this exhibition seeks to capture instead the calm and serenity of isolation.
Rather than seeing remoteness as simply a lack of urban conveniences, ‘Boondocks’ celebrates the seclusion and invites the viewer to consider the beauty, serenity and reinvigoration of their urban escape.

With his paint-stained Dulux t-shirt and workman’s trousers people assume Chris Lees paints houses, and he doesn’t contradict them. Opal miner turned landscape painter breathes new life into the art market with his arresting landscapes. Christopher Lees reflects an authority in his brushstrokes which is evident in his monumental perspectives of the Australian terrain. In his twenties Lees travelled extensively throughout remote Australia, working as an opal miner. Now based in rural Victoria, his experiences of the outback unravel on the canvas in panoramic and dioramic form.
