Presenting the Artists of Ampilatwatja in conjunction with our 6th Annual Collector’s Indigenous Art Exhibition. The artists of Ampilatwatja are unique within the contemporary indigenous art scene. Their style is iconic of their region and sets these artists apart in the eye of the critic and the buyer. This exhibition largely illustrates important hunting and plant collecting sites for the Ampilatwatja artists. The artist’s intimate affinity with their country influences their vibrant palette, the shifting patterns of pointillism, and their depiction of plant, geography and light.
Edie Kemarre Holmes was born near Hatches Creek. She has four brothers and one sister. She enjoys life at Ampilatwatja with her children and grandchildren.
“My fathers’ country is Antarrengeny; my mothers’ country is Akwerantye. We paint because we enjoy it.” Edie paints her country, “Apmer Mwerrangker”, meaning beautiful country.
“If I’m not painting, I like to go hunting for goanna and bush potato. I hope in the future, I can just keep going around here.”
Edie has continued to develop her own style, and she is easily recognised by her ghost gum trees and fine dot work. She was also one of the original artists in the Utopian Batik movement in the 1980’s.
Edie is passionate about art, country and culture; she brought her three daughters up with the same passions. All three of her daughters are talented artists within the community and often the ladies spend time together painting.
Edie’s paintings allude to her generous, peaceful and joyful character.
Rita Beasley is married to Murphy Teece, also an artist of the community, and lives at Ampilatwatja with their extended family. Rita has been painting for a period of some twenty years. She enjoys painting and feels it important for the community. Her artworks show special hunting and gathering grounds, all of which are connected to the dreaming of that country.
Rita’s vibrant palette, shifting patterns of pointillism, depiction of plant, geography and light, comes from Rita’s intimate a?nity with her country.
