Charmaine Pwerle is an Anmatyerre artist from the Utopia region of Central Australia, continuing one of the country’s most celebrated artistic lineages. She is the daughter of acclaimed artist Barbara Weir and the granddaughter of Minnie Pwerle, and grew up surrounded by influential Aboriginal artists whose cultural knowledge and artistic traditions have shaped her practice.

Drawing on stories and ceremonial knowledge passed down through her family, Charmaine is best known for her expressive interpretations of Awelye (Women’s Ceremony). Her paintings are characterised by confident brushwork, flowing line and dynamic movement, creating works that are both deeply rooted in tradition and unmistakably contemporary.

After spending her childhood between Utopia, Alice Springs and Adelaide, Charmaine returned to her homelands, where she further immersed herself in ceremony, language and cultural learning under the guidance of her mother and grandmothers. These experiences continue to inform her artistic practice today.

Charmaine Pwerle has established herself as one of the leading artists of the younger Utopia generation. Her work has been exhibited widely throughout Australia and internationally, and is represented in significant public and private collections, including the National Gallery of Victoria.

Polly Ngale (c.1940–2022) was a senior Anmatyerre artist from Utopia, approximately 240 kilometres north-east of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. As one of the oldest generation of women artists from the region, she played an important role in the development of the celebrated Utopia art movement.

Like many Utopia women, Polly began her artistic journey in the 1970s through the pioneering batik movement, which introduced Aboriginal women to contemporary art practice while drawing on traditional cultural knowledge. She later transitioned to painting, where she developed a distinctive style characterised by richly layered colour and expressive compositions. She also shared a close artistic relationship with her sister, the acclaimed artist Kathleen Ngale, with whom she often painted.

Polly’s paintings celebrate the landscapes and seasonal cycles of her Country. Recurring themes include the bush plum and its vibrant yellow seeds, shifting desert colours, and designs associated with Awelye – Women’s Ceremony and cultural law. Through luminous fields of colour and intricate mark-making, her works evoke the rhythms of the land and the enduring connection between people, place and ancestral knowledge.

Her paintings have been exhibited throughout Australia and internationally and are held in numerous public and private collections, reflecting her significant contribution to contemporary Aboriginal art.
