STUDIES
Self-taught, attended night classes in drawing and design at the East Sydney Technical College from 1942-45 under Hayward Veal
Background
Charles Blackman is a major figure in Australian art of the post-war years. His haunting and enchanting images of women and girls, absorbed in daydreams or games have an enduring appeal. Two significant themes in his work have been the Schoolgirl and Alice in Wonderland. Deep shadows and the accentuation of his figure’s eyes occur throughout Blackman’s works with a pervasive sense of melancholy.
Charles Blackman was largely self-taught, but he attended night classes in drawing and design at the East Sydney Technical College from 1942-45 under Hayward Veal. Blackman was a co-founder of the Melbourne Contemporary Art Society in 1953 and was one of seven Antipodeans responsible for the Antipodean Manifesto – a reaction against what they saw as the meteoric rise of abstract expressionism and non-figurative art in Australia and its intolerance of figurative painting. He has exhibited frequently since and is known for his facility in drawing.
In 1951 Blackman married a poet, Barbara Patterson, who was to become a lasting presence in his work. His work is held in all Australian state and most regional galleries, institutional and private collections

Lives and works in Sydney, Australia
George Raftopoulos compled his
BAVA at the University of Western Sydney in 1994 before going on to receive a Graduate Diploma in Painting from Sydney College of the Arts in 1997.
George Raftopoulos’s paintings are immediate, responsive, intuitive. He is a story-teller. In the manner of Aesop his paintings are modern visual fables and moral lessons; observations on man’s inhumanity to man and the human condition and more prosaically the vicissitudes of the artist, along with musings on politics, philosophy and life.
The migrant experience pervades. George Raftopoulos mines the Greek myths and psyche of his heritage and his experience growing up Greek in a small Australian country town. His DNA is Greek, His nurture is Australian. His way of working is cathartic. It’s about George…his story, his history, his search for identity.
George Raftopoulos positions himself as part of an art-historical lineage. His works are a form of modern day myth- making, fables of modern life; a psycho-drama and collage of his thoughts, dreams and ideas and his flights of fancy. While outwardly heroic and romantic, his works frequently harbour subversive, often acerbic social commentary, and elements of self-examination and reinvention in the service of purging the angst and dilemma of constructing identity, both personal and national.
George Raftopoulos has exhibited his work extensively over the last two decades at galleries and institutions including: Bega Valley Regional Gallery, the Greek Embassy in Canberra and the Paris Print Biennial.
His work is held in numerous public and private collections, including those of: New England Regional Gallery, Bega Valley Regional Gallery Hellenic Museum in Melbourne, Gold Coast City Art Gallery/Museum, University of Western Sydney, Molongolo Group, ABN AMRO and Credit Suisse Australia.
Exhibiting internationally since the late 1980s, Irene Hanenbergh has amassed a large body of work which the artist describes as ‘liminal portals’ into other worlds, and ‘windows of longing’, suggesting psychological and physical spaces that lie just beyond our grasp. Her evocative oil paintings are personal and contemporary renderings of the sublime in which scenes of primordial forests, lakes, mountains and oceans morph in and out of formation, infused with influences of the baroque, romanticism, and marginal fantasy genres. Exploring the slippage between contemporary and historic landscape painting, key styles and traditions including folk art, mystic and visionary practices, (faux) political histories and cults have been erased, repainted and spiritually charged, creating fantastical and otherworldly shifts as brushstrokes collide with impossible foliage, dark shadows and the spectre of history. Her works do not rely on narrative structures for the formation of content; rather they seduce or just invite the viewer to become immersed in another world, another time, another sensation.
Irene Hanenbergh‘s practice deals with concerns of disciplined immaterial sensibilities within (marginalized) Romantic, Visionary and Fantastic art genres. She uses various media including drawing, painting, sculpture and print media. Hanenbergh completed a Master of Fine Arts by Research at the Victorian College of the Arts (The University of Melbourne) in 2010. She holds as well a BFA (Hons) in Painting and Sculpture from The Academy of Fine Arts Minerva (1988, The Netherlands), a BFA (Hons) in Printmaking, from The Athens School of Fine Arts (1995, Greece) followed by 2 year Postgraduate Research at the same academy. Additionally she completed a Post Graduate Program at The Royal College of Art (1992, London). Intermittently over the last 25 years, she has spent considerable time on artist residencies & for the purpose of exhibitions, in various locations across Europe, Asia (Japan and Thailand) and the USA (NYC). Hanenbergh teaches Master of Contemporary Art at the VCA, University of Melbourne.
She has held solo exhibitions in Australia and internationally; amongst other ‘Mild Fantasy’ at Neon Parc, ‘Libertine, Celestine’, at Neon Parc, ‘House of Dandelion & Lohr (outperformance)’ at Hugo Michel Gallery, Adelaide; ‘Feldspar’ (with Storm Gold) at BUS Melbourne, ‘Argyle Dreaming (1863)’, a Black art project in Sydney; ‘Dada-Roman (4711)’, at Caves in Melbourne and collaborative exhibitions as Zilverster with Sharon Goodwin, at Sarah Scout Presents in Melbourne and in ‘Lurid Beauty’ at the National Gallery of Victoria. Zilverster is currently showing in ‘All the better to see you with (Fairy Tales transformed’ at the Potter Museum of Art in Melbourne, 2017.

Lives and works in Sydney, Australia
Dean Brown is a Sydney based painter and printmaker known for his formal rendering of figures and objects that contain a characteristic stillness and speak to moments in time.
In Brown’s paintings, there are two central components: the form and its shadow. Like a sundial, the shadow is cast onto vacant space and endows presence and drama onto the subject, creating a noir-like theatricality unique to still life painting.
Brown’s works are bold but they realise time in a way that is steady and quiet. Every angle is regarded, each striking colour (when colour appears) is carefully selected, and the body parts are fitted together like pieces to an anatomical puzzle. Shrouded in stillness and anonymity Browns paintings contain both a familiar and enigmatic quality. His highlighted silhouettes seem to be having an existential encounter with the nothingness that surrounds them compelling us to speculate on who they are and where they are going. The still life’s depicting glasses, bowls, and fruits enveloped in rich vibrant hues set against a seemingly paired-back background evoke a similar kind of intrigue in the everyday. But while the works are meditatively formulated, diffusing calmness and tranquillity, they also exude dynamism. The aluminium surface emboldens the fluidity of each mark allowing it to swiftly glide over the smooth plain without interruption. The artist’s defined use of line accentuates the geometry of each object.
With his patient eye and laboured handwork rendering humble everyday pursuits, objects, and commutes, Brown points to the stoic grace in the act of living day-to-day. By pausing on simple occasions he shows us life does not need to be extraordinary to have meaning, each second is serene and every action has weight.
Brown has completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts Honours at the National Art School. He also holds a Diploma of Design, TAFE, Sydney, and from 2000-07 studied Classical drawing and painting at the Julian Ashton Art School Sydney. Brown’s work has been included in solo and group exhibitions in Australia and internationally. He has been a finalist in the Archibald Prize, Australian Print Triennial Prize, Fremantle Arts Centre Print Award, Mosman Art Prize and the Burnie Print Prize. He was awarded the Storrier Onslow National Art School Paris Studio Residency at Cite International des Arts, Paris in 2011.

ARTIST STATEMENT
‘Freedom is limited under the rules. It is human nature to break away from restrictions and gain freedom.
It is a landscape of restriction and freedom.
The lines, the warp and weft, are the rules. The key is how to break the rule and get freedom. These beautiful latitude and longitude lines, just like the art of society. It seems to be perfect, but they are lifeless. Breaking the routine are the core values of the works. Each of works is a process of breaking. The process is a kind of confrontation and struggle between freedom and rules, as well as fight between sensibility and rationality. Frame and color limit the element and consciousness.
We can find a good way to keep everything going well between freedom and rules’… Dai Dandan

DOB: c.1930 – 2011
BORN: Lake MacDonald, WA
LANGUAGE GROUP: Pintupi
COMMUNITY: Kintore, NT
Makinti Napanangka was a senior Pintupi woman, born in the area of Karrkurritinyja (Lake Macdonald) around 1930. Her first contact with Europeans was with men travelling on camels near Lupul. She walked in with her family to Haasts Bluff before the Papunya Community was established and now resides at the Kintore Community.
Makinti was introduced to acrylic painting in 1995 as a member of the Haasts Bluff-Kintore painting project which was conducted at Kintore. She commenced painting for the Papunya Tula Artists in 1996, and quickly developed her own style: Makinti’s art is characterised by a more spontaneous approach in illustrating the traditional iconography than that done by previous artists painting at Papunya.
Makinti and her husband, Nyukiti Tjupurrula Makinti, often painted designs associated with travels of Kungka Kutjarra (Two Women). The patterning that feature in her paintings represent the swirling hair-string skirts worn by the Two Women during ceremonies when they reaffirm these mythological stories through dance and song, evident in the flowing rhythms of the lines.
These skirts are woven by the women from human hair using a simple spindle made of two sticks, and are shown as a complex pattern of pale lines over an orange or ochre-coloured background then set off with contrasting colours, often mauve or bright yellow highlights. The works are cheerful and free flowing, intensified at times by the addition of a stray grey-blue line or a patch of crimson, red or purple.
Makinti was not concerned with neatness, or the painstaking ‘dot by dot’ approach of others. Her bands of lines form the sweeping arcs, creating patterns that twist and bend. She was very different even to her Pintupi contemporaries. The impact of her work is haptic, concerned with touching and sensing with fingers, rather than purely visual. The repetition of colour has a rhapsodic effect akin to many bodies in dance and reveals the inner or spiritual power, the essence, of Makinti’s country and cultural identity. Makinti distilled body-painting designs to their quintessential forms, abundant and looping in rhythm and seeming to stretch beyond the frame.
Makinti Napanangka was one of the leading female artists of the Papunya Tula artists. Her work is highly sought after and is represented in major public and private collections. She was named as one of the 50 Most Collectable Australian artists in Australian Art Collector Issue 23, January – March 2003, Issue 27, January – March 2004 and again in Issue 31, January – March 2005. She has been described by Utopia Art’s director as the Central Desert’s “best painter since Emily (Kngwarreye), with no living match in her painterly freedom, and her fearless blend of naive and sophisticated elements”.

ARTIST STATEMENT
Bronze figurative sculpture has a long tradition. For me, the Art Deco period was the foundation for inspiration.
Running parallel to that are ideas that spring from photographic imagery, fashion and robotics.
Somewhere, ideas develop and grow, but always around the figure. I have always drawn, but mainly for the purpose of planning my sculptures. But now, my drawings are developing into a more expressive form of my creativity .
BACKGROUND
Born in Hammersmith England, Stephen served his apprenticeship as a Sculpture student at Newcastle upon Tyne and at Brighton College in the United Kingdom before moving to Australia as a young professional sculptor in the early 1980s. He has since attracted considerable interest and many commissions throughout Australia, and in Asia.
In his work, Glassborow relies heavily on traditional classical precedents and careful anatomical observation. Nevertheless, he manages to temper his respect for figurative precision with a refined elegance and beauty. His is sometimes an Art Deco renaissance.
Retaining fluidity in the body while still achieving sharp muscular perfection through clay thrills Glassborow. The skill of merging the two successfully drives him into further exploration of the human form.

Background
Brendon Darby was born in Perth in 1952. He is both an outstanding and versatile artist and professional musician. He has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions worldwide for more than 35 years. His works are held in many public and private collections throughout Australia and overseas. In 2007 Brendon was invited to exhibit at New York’s American Museum of Natural History as part of G’Day USA. This was the premiere presentation of his 10 year project Listening to Paintings – Australia. The multi media event involved Brendon’s live musical presentation, film and 10 major paintings describing the Australian landscape. The night raised over one million dollars for the Australian environment. It was then presented in Houston, as part of Australia Day celebrations.

The Yandicoogina Commission
In August 1998 Hamersley Iron Pty Ltd announced the commissioning of a collection of paintings to commemorate the opening of the new mine, “Yandicoogina” in March 1999. Brendon was flown to the Pilbara in September and spent time painting, drawing and photographing the landscape around Yandicoogina. The next 5 months were spent working on the larger paintings in his North Perth studio. The resulting 16 major works became part of the Hamersley Iron Pty Ltd collection, which is now the Rio Tinto collection.
“2018” Everyday iPad Painting
Brendon Darby painted everyday of 2018 on his iPad Pro. He painted whatever captured his attention on any given day. World events, very personal moments, anything that inspired him was captured and resulted in an evolving digital film. This groundbreaking artwork which runs for 3 hours 50 minutes, is a world first.

Ciphering inspiration from his home city of Beijing, Peihong creates abstracted acrylic
landscapes reflecting the dynamism of urban infrastructure. His ‘My Space’ series began with doodles of dead leaves and power lines, which gradually became abstracted until reaching, in the artist’s own words, a ‘simpler and purer’ reality. The stark, vibrant palette of the paintings reflects the optical saturation of the world’s most populous capital city, peppered with neon lights, cars, advertisements and buildings. In a quest for balance, Peihong distils this over-stimulating menagerie into nebulous blocks of colour that evoke psychedelic aerial views of the city. This is refracted in his painting process, which involves lying the canvas on a table and working from above, allowing the pools of acrylic to dry at their own will. Leaving areas of the whitewashed canvas blank, the artist ties shapes together with looped ‘threads’ to create a holistic, interconnected space, much like the modern, globalised city.
Artist Statement
2020
‘I am a painter and mainly focusing on abstract art area. My Space is my representative work. On my opinion, abstract art is free which has no specific formalization or shape, while show characteristics of independence and integrity in the level of visual expression. And in my latest years’ works, my concerns of trace and color of cities has moved on to the connection between people and space.
Each one of us is a consciousness, we are creators of our own massages and also act like a mediator of different massages. And these massages are formulating an invisible and abstract network that connecting each person, the shape of the network changes as our life goes on.
My Space series is a pictorial representation of consciousness network. And I choose painting to express the transformation of each moment of my thoughts. Those “shapes” and “colors” filling and constructing the space with an internal order, they look beautiful while hard to tell where they truly came from. And I could tell that the study on printmaking has influenced my way of working, go through a complex process to achieve a seemingly simple result, which allows me to paint over and over again on the canvas. Brushstrokes stack on top of one another, pigments drip and spread, mediums slowly solidified, I enjoy painting back and forth until they are covered and superimposed again.
The way I paint always lead to an unimaginable result, and brings to me a sense similar to the context of Kafka’s novel. I guess it is accurate to express the consciousness network. The time I spend to paint has been extended, necessarily. My Space is boundless, abstract and a space of nothingness, seemly unordered and tangled. And would finally become balanced, ordered and natural’

Since his first solo exhibition in 1980, Ken Done has become one of Australia’s most famous artists. His work has been described as the most original style to come out of Australia, and his paintings are in collections throughout the world.
Born 29 June, 1940, in Sydney, Ken left school at 14 to enter the National Art School in East Sydney. After 5 years study, he commenced a highly successful career as an art director and designer in New York, London and Sydney.
At the age of 40, after painting for many years, he gave up his advertising career to become a painter full-time. Since then, he has held over 50 one-man shows, including major exhibitions in Australia, Europe, Japan and the USA. His works have been shown in the Archibald, Sulman, Wynne, Blake, and Dobell Prizes.
In 1991, a major touring exhibition in Japan attracted over 200,000 visitors. The artist’s first European exhibition was held in Paris in 1996, to great acclaim, and in 2000 the art of Ken Done was successfully premiered in both Los Angeles and London.
Major projects in a very diverse career include the painting of a BMW Artcar, and the total decorative scheme for the Garden Restaurant at the Powerhouse Museum, in Sydney. In 1994, a major retrospective of Ken Done’s work “Ken Done: the art of design” was mounted by the Powerhouse Museum. In 2002 the Museum acquired his commercial art and design archive of more than 300 items.
In 1988, Hanako, a Tokyo fashion and lifestyle magazine, was launched, and featured a Ken Done painting on the cover every week for over 15 years. In 1999, Done was asked to create a series of works for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies programs of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
Ken’s paintings became the creative source of a unique, and highly successful Australian business which continues to promote Australian art and design to a world-wide audience. In 1993, Ken, together with his wife Judy, won the Fashion Industries of Australia’s Grand Award for Fashion.
Although he has worked extensively for many charitable organisations, the welfare of underprivileged children has always been a special concern of Ken’s. Father of the Year in 1989, Ken Done has been a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF since 1988.
Ken received the Order of Australia (A.M.), for services to Art, Design and Tourism in 1992. In many parts of the world, Ken Done has come to symbolise Australia and Australians: creative, optimistic and bold.

BORN 1952
STUDIES
Stewart Westle studied at Trinity Grammar School Melbourne where he excelled at print making. He then travelled throughout Australia, Asia and Europe and, although largely self taught, completed several painting courses on returning to Australia.
Background
Born in Adelaide, 1952, he developed a love for art at school. Upon graduating, he committed to practice painting enthusiastically; he travelled throughout Australia, Asia and Europe and, although largely self taught, completed several painting courses on returning home.
His main practice has been painting in oils, although he has extended his skills to include sculpture and installation. During his development years, Stewart was greatly influenced by Fred Williams and John Olsen, among others. In latter years his influences have included the art of Friedensreich Hundertwasser, Austrian artist and architect, and the intimate relationship that Indigenous Australians have with their land.
“My aim as an artist and landscape painter is to express what being in the bush means to me. My paintings speak of the precious moments when we take time out to communicate with nature. The time we sit on the headlands and dream about the future and reflect on the past, the times we walk along the lonely track and wonder about the complexity of it all. It’s a wonderful world we live in, I strive for my paintings to reflect some of that wonder. As the worlds people become more urbanised, I believe a healthier understanding of th natural m=world is increasingly important. For me it is vital to my wellbeing. Heaven knows the Summer of 2019/20 has highlighted the venerability of our natural world and our very existence within it.”
Westle’s love and enchantment for the Australian landscape and seascape is evident in the colour, freedom of application and raw energy emanating from his paintings, through which he has evolved a distinctive language for his landscapes. He believes that his best paintings are executed in a near meditative state.
”My paintings speak of the precious moments when we take time out to communicate with nature.”
Stewart uses his art to enhance his own sense of belonging. He currently lives in Red Hill, a small town on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, where Family and Community Involvement are integral to his daily life.
In recent years, Stewart has ventured into the world of sculpture, experimenting with the use of locally sourced Red Gum, Driftwood and Glass. After starting with smaller projects, Stewart began to make temporary large-scale artworks on the beaches up and down the East Coast of Australia. These were momentary pieces of work made from found beach jetsam that were washed away once the tide came in.
Recently Stewart was profiled at Yering Station Sculpture Exhibition with ‘S.O.S’; a new form artwork involving burnt logs from his property, arranged in Morse code.
As Stewart’s art practice matures, his fascination with the shapes, textures and colours of the natural world seems to be intensifying, translating into an ever-evolving practice.
Themes
Westle’s enthusiasm for the Australian landscape and seascape is evident in the colour, freedom of application and raw energy emanating from his paintings, through which he has evolved a distinctive language for landscape.

STUDIES
Self Taught
BACKGROUND
Sign-painter / opal miner turned landscape painter breathes new life into the art market with his arresting landscapes. Christopher Lees reflects an authority in his brushstrokes which is evident in his monumental perspectives of the Australian terrain. In his twenties Lees travelled extensively throughout remote Australia, working as an opal miner and sign-writer. Now based in rural Victoria, his experiences of the outback (and his own bush property and surrounds) unravel on the canvas in panoramic and dioramic form.
ARTIST STATEMENT
“Freedom has always been important to me. When I was younger, if I didn’t like what I was doing, I would just walk away. I would get in the car, maybe even travel to another state, and simply trust that I would find other work. I feel privileged to be in this position – painting full-time and still having that freedom to travel for inspiration.”
He says that, as a self-taught artist, painting is more instinctual for him. “I know if a painting is working – practice also helps guide instinct… I would like my work to live on and I am conscious that people are buying works for investment.”
“I want to connect with the viewer by using colour and familiar motifs that are typically associated with the Australian environment. Exaggeration of space and elements create a theatrical representation of the landscape.”
PROCESS
Lees’s process is straightforward. He begins with a sketch which organises the painting, creating a sense of balance and proportion that is transposed onto the canvas, working to achieve a harmonious composition. The resultant landscapes are still, stark, and mysterious. Usually devoid of people and fauna, they echo the experience of the painter in the studio with only his creative muse for company.
“I exaggerate space and the elements of landscape which makes my work theatrical, but colour is the key…I want to ensure that people understand my work is concerned with the Australian landscape – I love those earthy colours.”

Painterly detail richly illuminates skies with delicate layers of graduated colour. Finger-painting adds immediacy to cliff faces and calligraphic brushwork delicately enhances tree branches. Lees admires Fred Williams’ abstractions in nature, and this influence appears in his reductionist tree forms.
Lees explains his intentions, “The Australian landscape is an enigma of nature’s imagination. I try to illustrate this concept in my paintings. In my canvasses no picturesque European gardens or manicured lawns are in evidence, but gnarly, craggy, primeval escarpments that plummet into the abyss. The landforms are not easily accessible, viewed only by floating on the deep black liquid with no floor, or birdlike, hovering over this strange land in a dreamlike trance. There are no sounds, no movement or signs of life, but fragments of familiar motifs such as boulders, trees and occasionally fence lines that suggest enigmatic past habitations.
I try to represent the Australian bush with emotions that can’t be written down. I want the viewer to feel alone, at peace, and privileged to behold this surreal landscape”.
Lees has built up a visual memory bank of composites from his travels, which he continually refers to and draws upon for his work. Secret streams of iron-coloured water for example, are bordered by iconic eucalypt and mountainsides littered with boulders, cliffs and crevasses – a scene not from one particular place, but a merging of various. Lees’ process is straightforward, beginning with a sketch which organises the painting, creating a sense of balance and proportion that is transposed onto the canvas. The resultant landscapes are still, stark, and mysterious. Lees strives to attain perfection in the way each subject is rendered and harmony in composition. Usually devoid of people and fauna, they echo the experience of the painter in the studio with only his creative muse for company.
“I like creating sheer cliff faces and the towering mountains. My paintings don’t depict one specific place. Instead I want to convey a feeling about the Australian landscape in totality.”
Demand for his work is now driven by overseas and local collectors. Lees is represented in corporate and private collections in Australia, Asia, Europe, the UK and the US.

MITCHELL ENGLISH — COASTAL SOUL, CONTEMPORARY VISION
Mitchell English is a Noosa-based, Sydney-born artist whose work captures the raw, sun-drenched essence of coastal life. With over 30 years of painting and a lifetime of chasing waves, his art is a visual love letter to the Australian coastline.
A life-long surfer, English’s paintings radiate a utopian vision of Australian beach life. His works define cropped fragments of infinity, taking the viewer beyond the canvas into the space of memory. Being lost in joy and lost in waves are palpable inspirations that infuse his pieces with captivating energy.
English’s work has been featured in Vogue Living, belle, InsideOut, Taschen, Home Beautiful, and ELLE Decoration. His pieces grace private collections and prestigious public institutions worldwide, including Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum.
English has exhibited in solo and group shows across Australia and internationally, creating art that resonates with both art enthusiasts and surf aficionados.

Born in Prague, Marcella was influenced by old master painters and traditional oil painting techniques. Marcella delights in the fragility of nature and its fluctuations. Her paintings are studies in tone, light and color – dancing on the surface of a fishpond, a swelling ocean or a peony. And while her subject matter harks back to the impressionists, her technique goes back even further to the 17th century master’s use of layered oils on linen.

Born: c. 1930
Deceased: 2009
Language Group: Anmatyerre
Country: Atnangkere , Utopia Region, North East of Alice Springs
Medium: Acrylic on Canvas and Linen, Batik on Silk, Print Making
Subjects: Awelye (Women’s Ceremony and Body Paint Designs), Arnkerrthe (Mountain Devil Lizard), Bush Bean
Ada was involved in the art movement of Utopia since its inception. She began with the Utopia Women’s Batik Group in the late 1970’s where her work was exhibited extensively and featured on the cover of the Utopia A Picture Story publication by A. Brody (Heytesbury Holdings, Perth, 1990). In 1988 Ada subsequently began painting with acrylics during CAAMA’s Summer Project and continued in this medium until suffering a stroke 2004.
Ada’s work is represented in many major and private collections all over the world. She is known for her bright, bold linear patterns often incorporating breasts, indicating women’s ceremonial body paint designs associated with the Arnkerrthe (Mountain Devil Lizard) Dreaming for Atnangkere and Ahalkere Country. This Dreaming story was the most significant for Ada along with her sisters, Kathleen, Gloria, Myrtle, Violet, Nancy and Jean Petyarre (also known as the Seven Petyarre Sisters).
Ada always painted like her personality: vibrant, outgoing and blatantly honest! She was a lover of bright colours, in particularly blue, but also painted in more traditional and subdued colours. Fine detailed works are not traditional of her group nor were they any part of Ada’s works. She is a traditional senior Aboriginal woman who involved and expressed herself to the fullest extent both on canvas and in her ancient culture, her most favoured works being the women’s ceremonial body paint designs (Awelye) for the Mountain Devil Lizard (Arnkerrthe).
Ada had two daughters, June and Hilda and four sons, Paddy, Colin, Stephen and Ronnie. All are married and have children of their own. Ada had over 30 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren when she passed. When Ada was asked how many grandchildren she had she replied, whilst slowly shaking her head, ‘too many!’ Many of her large extended family have continued Ada’s tradition and are Utopia artists too.

Kate Pittas is a Brisbane-based contemporary landscape painter, exploring her own experiences of the Australian bush. Her work is expressive, and delves into themes of nostalgia, memory
and connection.
Hitting the road and discovering or revisiting regional and remote locations in Australia provides Kate with personal experiences she can work with back in her home studio in the bushy outer suburbs of Brisbane. Having studied Visual Arts at university, Kate taught in Sydney high schools for close to a decade before transitioning away from the classroom and into her current full-time practice and career as a painter, which she relishes.
