BORN 1964
REGION Kintore
LANGUAGE Pintupi
Debra Young Nakamarra was born at Papunya in 1964 and is the eldest daughter of renowned Pintupi artists Walangkura Napanangka and Johnny Yungut Tjupurrula. She later moved with her family to the Kintore (Walungurru) community, growing up during a significant period in the history of Western Desert art.
Following the emergence of the Papunya painting movement in the early 1970s, Debra’s parents began painting the ancestral stories of their Country. Debra began her own artistic journey in 1984, during a period when women from Kintore and Haasts Bluff began creating their own paintings rather than solely assisting the senior male artists of their families.
Debra learned both the techniques of painting from her mother, Walangkura Napanangka, and the cultural knowledge associated with Women’s Dreaming stories connected to the ancestral figure Kutungka Napanangka. These stories form part of the Tingari creation narratives, which describe the journeys of ancestral beings who travelled across the desert, creating sacred sites and establishing ceremonial traditions that continue today.
Her paintings focus on the women’s ceremonial sites and journeys associated with Kutungka Napanangka, using traditional Pintupi iconography inherited from her mother and the wider Western Desert painting tradition. Through her distinctive use of colour, pattern and composition, Debra has developed her own unique visual language while continuing the cultural legacy of her family.
Her work reflects the deep connection between Country, ceremony and ancestral knowledge, carrying forward the stories of generations while contributing to the continuing evolution of contemporary Aboriginal art.
We are proud to present a specially curated group exhibition of iconic female Western Desert Painters, and cordially invite you and your guest to join us as we celebrate these artists and their work.… Continue reading
