Nancy Ross Nungurrayi
- 1935 – 2010
Nancy Ross Nungurrayi was born c. 1935 in the bush around Pollock Hills area in Western Australia desert country. She passed away peacefully at home in 2010. Nancy was a Pintupi speaker and sister of Naata Nungurrayi and George Tjungurrayi, also both renowned artists.
Nancy commenced painting with Papunya Tula Cooperative in 1996, depicting the culture and the topography of the region from Marapinti to Wala Wala, Pulyulnga and associated sites around Kiwirrkura and Wirrulnga. Her knowledge of her country was extensive – she lived as a child at Wala Wala with her parents and later travelled with her husband in this region until he passed away. Nancy then walked to Mt. Liebig carrying her first child, Marlene Nampitjinpa.
She participated in many Group Exhibitions with Papunya Tula artists, and in 2000 joined her sister Naata and senior women artists including Ningura Napurrula to produce a collaborative painting, “Kintore Women’s Painting”, by senior Pintupi women, which was included in the prestigious ‘Papunya Tula: Genesis and Genius’ exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW, Sydney
Prior to her passing Nancy had established herself as one of the leading artists of Kintore and was a respected Elder whose artwork is avidly sought after by collectors within Australia and Internationally. Her paintings in the main reflect the sacred women’s sites and ceremonies of her country in bold layered colouring, as well as the food gathering so important in the lives of the desert women, and the finer depictions of Tali (Sandhills).
Her art is represented in major Collections Worldwide.
