Yinarupa Nangala was born around 1948 in Kiwirrkurra and has become recognised as one of the leading contemporary Aboriginal artists of the Western Desert. She entered the art world in 1996, drawing on a rich cultural heritage shaped by the Papunya Tula art movement, of which her father, the respected Pintupi artist Anatjari Tjampitjinpa, was a founding member.

Yinarupa developed a distinctive artistic style that combines her deep spiritual connection to Country with the physical landscapes of her ancestral lands. Her paintings predominantly depict Ngamurru, a significant women’s ceremonial meeting place near Kiwirrkurra in Western Australia. This Country is also associated with the harvesting of Acacia seeds, which are traditionally ground into flour and used to make latja, a ceremonial damper bread.

Her works feature a combination of traditional Pintupi iconography and contemporary abstraction, often presenting an aerial perspective of Country. The shapes and patterns within her paintings represent important landscape features, including rockholes, water sources, women’s ceremonial sites and areas abundant with bush foods.

Working primarily with a striking palette of black and white, Yinarupa creates paintings that honour ancestral knowledge while offering a contemporary interpretation of her cultural inheritance. Her work reflects the continuing relationship between Country, ceremony and memory.

Yinarupa lives in Alice Springs with her five children and continues to develop her artistic practice through regular visits to her ancestral homelands near Jupiter Well in Western Australia. Her paintings are celebrated for their elegance, cultural depth and contribution to the ongoing legacy of Western Desert art.
