When life gets you down, don’t get numb, become platinum. Throughout Pop culture, the theme of sad women entangled in doomed love affairs has long fascinated artists, from Picasso’s ‘Weeping Women’ series to the comic book liaisons of Roy Lichtenstein. In Sun Flare, Johnny Romeo cleverly appropriates Lichtenstein’s painting ‘Ohhh… Alright’ (1964), transforming his prototypical 1960s ‘sad girl’ into a 90s Gen-X heroine who finds empowerment through indifference. The original Lichtenstein depicts a distraught woman on the phone responding with the words ‘Ohhh… Alright’, a direct reference to a panel from DC Comic’s ‘Secret Hearts #88, in which a lady is left heartbroken by an unseen lover telling her he cannot make a date. Romeo ramps up the drama in Sun Flare, depicting the woman in vibrant Technicolour hues as tears stream down her face and she shouts ‘Whatever!’ over the line. Ditching the reluctant compliance of ‘ohhh… alright’ for the cool detachment of ‘Whatever!’, the woman refuses to remain ‘forever numb’ as she powers through her heartbreak and finds strength in her newfound independence. The shift from ‘numb’ to ‘Forever Platinum’ encapsulates the woman’s newfound confidence, as she dismisses her fair-weather fling with the unreactive nature of platinum, a noble metal resistant to extreme conditions. Building on this, the title Sun Flare refers to an intense burst of radiation from the release of magnetic energy associated with sunspots. No longer the object of a tragic romance, Romeo’s woman radiates with the power of a sun flare, reclaiming her self-worth as she remains strong under pressure, unyielding and empowered.
