H33513 Fast Flow Glide

Very few basketball players in history have hit the legendary peaks of the late, great Kobe Bryant. Throughout his illustrious career, Bryant has inspired millions around the world with his relentless drive and exceptional skills on the court. In Fast Flow Glide, Johnny Romeo delivers a vibrant tribute to the basketball star that plays off Bryant’s status as the only player in NBA history to retire with two jerseys, numbers 8 and 24. The painting takes on a thrillingly psychedelic bend in its portrayal of Kobe Bryant as two mirror images converging into a single basketball at the centre of the canvas. Brimming with an undeniable sense of energy and movement, the work captures Bryant at the peak of his powers as he sets the court ablaze amidst a backdrop of fiery, prismatic hues. Romeo pays tribute to Bryant’s inimitable playing style in the title Fast Flow Glide, highlighting the way in which the LA Lakers legend masterfully combined finesse, speed, and athleticism to dominate his competition. Shades of hip hop culture can be seen in the text passage ‘Two Too West Coast’, a riff on the dual Kobes featured in the piece. Inspired by the lyric ‘Scottie Pippin both ways’ from Dr Dre’s 2015 song ‘Genocide’, Fast Flow Glide’s references to the LA Lakers and the quintessentially Californian sound of G-funk rap humorously begs the question: is this ‘Too West Coast’? Ultimately, the painting examines the legacy that Bryant has left on the world in the wake of his untimely death in 2020. By creating a double vision of the famous basketballer, Romeo suggests that the very person we seek to reinvent ourselves into exists within ourselves.
