H33514 Fear Less Express
It takes an absence of fear to jump into the unknown. Fear Less Express is a frenetic Technicolour celebration of those who live life on the edge and dive headlong into the realm of possibilities featuring the Man Without Fear himself, Daredevil. In the painting, Johnny Romeo harkens back to the punchy comic book imagery and slick advertising campaigns of the 1950s as he ingeniously mashes together the legendary superhero stylings of Stan Lee with the iconic cigarette brand Lucky Strike. Breaking the barrier between illusion and reality, Daredevil leaps heroically out of the Lucky Strike logo as he casts his signature billy club towards the audience with full force in his own attempt at a lucky strike. Circular motifs abound throughout the Landed! series, and in this painting, it signifies not only a logo but more importantly a portal into an exciting world of new beginnings. Notably, Romeo ruptures the very boundaries that separate these old and new realities as an expanse of Wedgewood blue bursts forth from the Lucky Strike logo into the foreground of the painting. Echoes of classic ad slogans can be seen in the painting’s upbeat title Fear Less Express, which cheekily plays on Daredevil’s reputation in the Marvel universe as the Man Without Fear. The artist continues this anthemic streak in the bold word assemblage ‘Never Tears Fear’. For Romeo, stepping outside the confines of the ordinary is a courageous space where there are no tears, where depression and doubt give way to a life where fear does not exist.

Johnny Romeo is an internationally acclaimed Australian painter. Considered Australia’s leading Pop artist, Romeo is spearheading the global Neo-Expressionist Pop movement with his electrifying collision of rock’n’roll swagger, comic book aesthetics and street art. Described by GQ Magazine Australia as ‘part punk, part pop’, Romeo’s Kitsch Pop works are explosive sugar rushes of Technicolour imagery and urban grittiness that are turning heads worldwide.
