When it comes to artists and songs that define the 90s, few come close to the cultural impact of Madonna’s 1990 smash hit ‘Vogue’. Freeze Fly is an ecstatic visual celebration of the groundbreaking pop star that channels the Pop spirit of Warhol and the hedonistic pulse of the 1990s disco revival in Romeo’s signature Kitsch Pop style. Echoing Warhol’s famous ‘Double Elvis’ (1963) and ‘Two Marilyns’ (1962), the painting depicts Madonna as a double optical illusion ‘striking a pose’ with an alluring air of charisma and confidence. The Divine Miss M’s hands extend into the image at dramatic angles, guiding our gaze and creating a frame within a frame that evokes the powerful freezing gestures of ‘voguing’, a queer form of dance born in the flamboyant ballrooms of New York that hit the mainstream through Madonna’s single. Bursting with an irrepressible energy, the painting invites viewers to ‘strike a pose’, not just as a fleeting trend but as a ‘fly’ form of sophisticated self-expression and a way of life, which is captured in the title Freeze Fly. With its thumping basslines and propulsive house beats, Romeo nods to the infectious grooves of ‘Vogue’ through the word assemblage ‘Disco Pop’, which he astutely morphs into ‘Disco Pose’ to highlight the song’s dominance on the dancefloor. Vivacious and larger-than-life, Freeze Fly is a Technicolour tribute to a Pop visionary who defied the norms of her era, and influenced the worlds of modelling, music and dance for generations to come.
