Get foxy as you take to the skies with Johnny Romeo’s cunning Fennec fox pilot in High Rise. Drawing inspiration from various folklores and cultures, Romeo’s foxy aviator is an air-borne adventurer decked out in vintage pilot glasses and explorer gear that recalls the curiosity and courage of Fox McCloud, the space-faring protagonist from Nintendo’s beloved game franchise ‘Star Fox’. The Fennec fox gazes into the audience with a sly expression of quiet determination, inspired by his hero Fox McCloud to transcend the earthbound limitations of his species and soar through the heavens. With his slick combination of shrewd intelligence, adaptability and cunning, Romeo’s flying fox symbolizes the thrill of trying new ideas and experiences in pursuit of your dreams. For the fox figure, there are no limitations, only infinite possibilities. Like Neo, the protagonist from the 1999 sci-fi classic ‘The Matrix’, Romeo’s fox has undergone a personal transformation where he has unplugged himself from the Matrix and is ready to do whatever it takes to realise his true potential. With his Neo-esque aviator goggles in tow, the fox is now able to make sense of the indecipherable code of the Matrix, which Romeo deftly alludes to through the scrambled compositional spacing of the word assemblage ‘Neo No Matrix’. No longer bound by the rules of everyday life, the sky is truly the limit for Romeo’s ‘high riser’ as he leans into his inner Neo and sets off into the sunset on his trusty plane.

Johnny Romeo is an internationally acclaimed Australian painter. Considered Australia’s leading Pop artist, Romeo is spearheading the global Neo-Expressionist Pop movement with his electrifying collision of rock’n’roll swagger, comic book aesthetics and street art. Described by GQ Magazine Australia as ‘part punk, part pop’, Romeo’s Kitsch Pop works are explosive sugar rushes of Technicolour imagery and urban grittiness that are turning heads worldwide.
