First popularised in the ‘The Wizard Of Oz’ (1939), ‘Over the Rainbow’ today remains a powerful song in the soundtrack of Pop culture that has been covered by countless artists from Israel Kamakawiwo’ole to Ariana Grande. The iconic song’s universal appeal to young and old alike evokes a longing sense of hope that urges us to dream of a brighter future, often amidst the backdrop of tragedy and adversity. In Lolli Pop, Johnny Romeo re-envisions the life-affirming positivity of ‘Over the Rainbow’ as a call for optimism during these uncertain Corona times, as his cheeky text assemblage yearns for a world ‘over the limbo’ of the current pandemic somewhere ‘over the rainbow’.
The painting depicts Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz embracing her dog Toto as they look wistfully into the distance, their heads covered in Retro Futurist bubble helmets as they seek joy and protection amidst the chaos of the Corona crisis. Romeo’s use of vibrant, candy-coated hues injects Lolli Pop with a boundless joie de vivre that perfectly captures Dorothy and Toto’s sunny dispositions and youthful innocence while paying homage to the ‘Wizard of Oz’ as cinema’s first Technicolour film. Connections to confectionary are further made in the painting’s sweet title Lolli Pop, a reference to the Lolli Pop Guild of Munchkins who serenade Dorothy when she arrives in Technicolour Munchkinland.

Described by GQ Magazine Australia as ‘part punk, part pop’, Romeo’s Kitsch Pop works are explosive sugar rushes of Technicolour imagery and urban grittiness that are turning heads worldwide.
