Prepare to get groovy with the art world’s most famous David as he embraces his New Romantic destiny as music’s greatest David in New World Groove. Masterfully blending Renaissance grandeur with the glam rock pomp of music’s own Renaissance man, Johnny Romeo drags Michelangelo’s ‘David’ across the centuries into the heady days of rock and pop by transforming him into the Starman himself, David Bowie. With Bowie’s iconic Aladdin Sane lightning bolt emblazoned across his face, Romeo’s Technicolour David gazes intensely into the skies, filled with the determination to step boldly into a new era—a future unbounded by the past. The large scale of the work amplifies the drama of his stare, making the viewer feel the weight of David’s presence and the significance of his journey from a large marble statue into a larger-than-life rock star. Far from the chaotic overtones of ‘Get Frantic’, David’s determined expression highlights his desire to ‘Get Gigantic’, as he beckons us to follow his lead in taking up space in order to embody our true, authentic self. As a ‘New World Groover’, David segues effortlessly through time from classical antiquity into the strobe-lit euphoria of the discotheque. Inspired by David Bowie’s 1983 anthem ‘Let’s Dance’, the painting evokes the post-disco energy and flamboyant decadence of the New Romantic movement, bathed in the vivid, unapologetic Pop colours of the 1980s. New World Groove is an invitation to seize the moment, channel your own lightning strike, and step confidently into the future—gigantic and unafraid.

Johnny Romeo is an internationally acclaimed Australian painter. Considered Australia’s leading Pop artist, Romeo is spearheading the global Neo-Expressionist Pop movement with his electrifying collision of rock’n’roll swagger, comic book aesthetics and street art. Described by GQ Magazine Australia as ‘part punk, part pop’, Romeo’s Kitsch Pop works are explosive sugar rushes of Technicolour imagery and urban grittiness that are turning heads worldwide.
