H33508 Rad Rider
Everybody has a bad day, even if you’re a lean, mean queen of speed. Buzzing with an invigorating sense of Poptimism, Rad Rider is a powerful affirmation of self-worth, and the importance of pushing through when the going gets tough. The painting pays homage to the comic book aesthetics of Roy Lichtenstein, re-envisioning his iconic ‘Girl with Hair Ribbon’ (1965) as a classic Vespa racer shedding a single tear, a reference to Lichtenstein’s ‘Crying Girl’ series (1963). In contrast to the downcast expression of the rider girl, the bold term ‘Rad’ shines through the painting like a beacon of positivity, reminding us that we are brave, spectacularly rad, and able to conquer any challenge that stands in our way. Themes of happiness and overcoming adversity are reinforced through the text passage ‘Sigh On’, which is altered to form the statement ‘Shine On’. Read together with the term ‘Rad’, ‘Shine On’ becomes a potent mantra that calls on us to persevere and achieve our fullest potential. ‘Rad’s’ bold red typeface also reappropriates the logo of beloved American skateboarding brand Rad, recalling the adventurous spirit of skate culture in the 80s and 90s. Romeo builds on this sentiment with the title Rad Rider, re-envisaging the painting’s sullen figure as a confident girl on the move tearing up the mean streets.

Johnny Romeo is an internationally acclaimed Australian painter. Considered Australia’s leading Pop artist, Romeo is spearheading the global Neo-Expressionist Pop movement with his electrifying collision of rock’n’roll swagger, comic book aesthetics and street art. Described by GQ Magazine Australia as ‘part punk, part pop’, Romeo’s Kitsch Pop works are explosive sugar rushes of Technicolour imagery and urban grittiness that are turning heads worldwide.
