In the wild jungles of Johnny Romeo’s Kitsch Pop world, being savage is not just a means of survival, it’s a way of life. Savage Riot sees Romeo unleash the beast within with his visceral depiction of a roaring panther decked out in an extravagant mask as an homage to the quintessential country-western renegade, ‘The Lone Ranger’. Roaming the lawless wilderness alone, Romeo’s masked panther operates outside the formal structures of society, evoking the Lone Ranger’s adventures amidst the rugged frontier of the Wild West. However, while the Lone Ranger is driven by a sense of justice, the Lone Panther’s fabulous masquerade mask points to intentions more hedonistic than heroic. Deep down, Romeo’s festive feline just wants to have fun and invite you to his primal party, a point captured with gleeful delight in the word assemblage ‘Play Mode’. With tongue firmly in cheek, Romeo riffs on the panther’s killer instincts by transforming ‘Play Mode’ into ‘Slay Mode’, implying that his pleasure-seeking panther did not just come out to play, but to be the life of the party and slay on the dancefloor. Philosophically, the phrase ‘Slay Mode’ encourages us to tap into our inner beast and tackle life with the full-blooded determination of a wild cat set loose on the world. While focused more on partying than prey nowadays, Romeo’s masked Panther cannot fully escape his primitive instincts as he snarls ferociously with his fangs in anticipation of his Savage Riot.

Johnny Romeo is an internationally acclaimed Australian painter. Considered Australia’s leading Pop artist, Romeo is spearheading the global Neo-Expressionist Pop movement with his electrifying collision of rock’n’roll swagger, comic book aesthetics and street art. Described by GQ Magazine Australia as ‘part punk, part pop’, Romeo’s Kitsch Pop works are explosive sugar rushes of Technicolour imagery and urban grittiness that are turning heads worldwide.
