H33515 Sky High Float

The path to enlightenment is paved with unexpected twists and turns. In Sky High Float,Johnny Romeo envisions a rainbow-tinged world in a galaxy far, far away, where Stormtroopers lay down their guns and find serenity. The painting portrays a Technicolor Stormtrooper wearing a suit as he calmly meditates in a lotus pose. There is an elegant, Zen-like quality to Romeo’s suave Stormtrooper, whose incongruous mixture of space-age armour and slickened suit and tie reflects the duality of our own lives as it encompasses both the moments we need to fight, and the times we need to dress up and chill. In an absurdly philosophical way, the sci-fi guru is a Stormtrooper for every occasion. Beneath the calm cosmic crusader lies an ominous black hole signifying the destruction and depression that he has risen above in his quest for meaning and a new kind of hope. Freed from a life of violence, the Stormtrooper has become transfigured into a paragon of peace forging his own destiny and transcending into a new reality. Romeo carries this message of harmony through the powerful word assemblage ‘New Trooper Hope’. References to Star Wars abound in the passage, as the artist cheekily alludes to the Stormtrooper’s identity as a clone in the word assemblage ‘New Trooper’ while giving a nod to the 1977 smash film that kicked off the Star Wars franchise, ‘A New Hope’. On a deeper level, however, the phrase ‘new hope’ is a call for a better world, where the horrors of war give way to a new dawn of peace and unity. This thread of blue sky-thinking is reinforced in the painting’s defiantly Poptimistic title Sky High Float.
