Who says being dead has to cramp your style? Enter Young Suede, Johnny Romeo’s rambunctious tribute to history’s most enduring rockstar, Elvis. In the painting, the King of rock’n’roll is portrayed as a neon-drenched crooner reliving the energized, raunchy performances of his youth as he belts out tunes with a seductive lean, a sharp suit, and a killer pompadour that would put living rockers to shame. Bathed in Technicolor brilliance, Romeo’s undead Elvis smoulders into the mic with the gusto of a rockstar with a literal bone to pick – living proof that flesh may fade, but rock’n’roll is eternal. Within the context of the painting, Elvis is re-envisioned as a symbol of perpetual motion, a skeletal maestro pushing boundaries and blazing his own path into the future, even in the great beyond. Romeo cranks up the absurdity with the phrase ‘Never Fall,’ a nod to Elvis overcoming his own mortality andmore broadly leaving an everlasting mark on Pop culture. A master of clever word play, Romeo slyly morphs the word ‘Fall’ into the word assemblage ‘Never Stall’ to create an anthemic declaration from a cadaverous crooner relentlessly pursuing the fountain of eternal cool. The title, Young Suede, is a slick play on Elvis’ 1956 rendition of ‘Blue Suede Shoes,’ capturing the essence of this zombified icon’s newfound lease on the afterlife. Armed with his signature pitch black humour in full force, Young Suede proves that the dead can truly be the life of the party.

Johnny Romeo is an internationally acclaimed Australian painter. Considered Australia’s leading Pop artist, Romeo is spearheading the global Neo-Expressionist Pop movement with his electrifying collision of rock’n’roll swagger, comic book aesthetics and street art. Described by GQ Magazine Australia as ‘part punk, part pop’, Romeo’s Kitsch Pop works are explosive sugar rushes of Technicolour imagery and urban grittiness that are turning heads worldwide.
