In the world of boxing, Mike Tyson reigned supreme with a ferocity that matched his infamous chomp. Once dubbed the ‘baddest man on the planet’, Iron Mike’s vicious fighting style and controversial behaviour both inside and outside the ring made him one of the most feared fighters in boxing, although his imprisonment in 1992 forced him to reset his career. Double Grind portrays boxing’s former wild child decked out in championship belts like a heavyweight king, with his fists upraised and ready to dance in the ring. Romeo’s artistic wizardry captures the complex duality of the Tyson tale in a thrilling double-vision diptych that showcases the boxer’s post-prison redemption journey. Indulging in his grimly comedic side, Romeo’s double Mike hilariously references the two bites that made history during Tyson’s infamous ear-biting incident in 1997. Glimmers of the early brazen cockiness that made Mike Tyson such a ferocious dynamo in the ring can be seen in the word assemblage ‘Young Average Savage’, with its clever play on Iron Mike being a cut above your ‘average boxer.’ ‘Young Savage’ captures the brutish bravado of Tyson’s Kid Dynamite era, recalling a golden age when the boxer juggled WBA, WBC, and IBF belts like it was child’s play as the world’s youngest heavyweight champion. As the painting unfolds, however, so too does Tyson’s evolution. Iron Mike, once an unhinged force of nature, mellows out in the artwork. Romeo paints Tyson’s calmer, more controlled side, reflecting his shift in fighting style over the years from a raging storm to a controlled hurricane. Rounding off the work, the title Double Grindnods to Tyson’s dual careers and his grind in 1996 to snatch back two of his stripped championship titles.
