Embrace your inner beast and find the power to take on the impossible with Johnny Romeo’s explosive Technicolour tribute to the King of Monsters, Giant Beast Odyssey. The painting sees Romeo push his signature Kitsch Pop style to breathtakingly cinematic proportions, depicting Godzilla as a colossal force of nature taking on the fearsome swell of Hokusai’s ‘great wave’. A vibrant, blood red sun rises in the background, bathing these clashing titans in jagged shards of eye-popping, psychedelic colours as it ushers in a new age where giants rule the world. Originally conceived as a metaphor for the horrors of the atomic bomb in post-war Japan, Godzilla and his devastating power is re-envisioned as a life-affirming symbol for the indomitable courage we each possess to overcome life’s challenges. In contrast, the awe-inspiring strength and terrifying vastness of Hokusai’s ‘great wave’ is dwarfed by its titanic Kaiju opponent, implying that there is no wave or challenge too high for us to rise above. Read in this light, Godzilla forces the great wave into submission by unleashing his formidable ‘sea roar’. Romeo ingeniously invites the audience to share in the triumph of Godzilla’s earth-shattering bellow by creating the word assemblage ‘Sea Roar Soar’, which calls on us to fully take charge of our potential and tap into the ‘soaring beast’ within. This sense of fearless confidence is encapsulated in the painting’s epic title Giant Beast Odyssey. A playful nod to both Homer’s classic poem and the 2018 video game ‘Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey’, the title highlights that the power to conquer fear and take on the world is not something we gain overnight, but rather through a heroic journey of self-discovery.
