Originally conceived as a metaphor for the horrors of the atomic bomb in post-war Japan, Godzilla and his devastating power is re-envisioned as a life-affirming symbol for the indomitable courage we each possess to overcome life’s challenges. In contrast, the awe-inspiring strength and terrifying vastness of Hokusai’s ‘great wave’ is dwarfed by its titanic Kaiju opponent, implying that there is no wave or challenge too high for us to rise above. A playful nod to both Homer’s classic poem and the 2018 video game ‘Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey’, the title highlights that the power to conquer fear and take on the world is not something we gain overnight, but rather through a heroic journey of self-discovery.
