Carve through the seafoam peaks of the cosmic ocean with Pop Culture’s resident intergalactic voyager, the Silver Surfer. In Rock Steady Flow, Johnny Romeo ingeniously re-imagines the cover of legendary guitarist Joe Satriani’s 1987 smash hit album, ‘Surfing with the Alien’, which notably featured Marvel’s very own silver hued spacefarer. The painting depicts a majestic Silver Surfer on his signature surfboard riding a wave that is spilling out of the mouth of the Santa Fe ‘Screaming Hand’ logo, a nod to the hand of Galactus featured on the back cover of Satriani’s album. A frenetic fusion of comic book nostalgia and 90s surf and skate culture, Rock Steady Flow evokes the thrill of hitting the surf and the beachy 90s rock bands that soundtracked these adventures. At the same time, Romeo’s electrifying mixture of rock wizardry and superheroes captures the excitement of having his teenage mind blown by Joe Satriani’s innovative approach to guitar. Breathtaking oceanic blues and nautical teals draw the Silver Surfer earthbound into the turbulent waters of our world, as he confidently navigates the violent waves of the screaming void. Amidst the chaotic swirl surrounding him, the Silver Surfer remains calm and collected, his steely resolve and literal metallic body captured with razor sharp wit in the word assemblage ‘Be Real Steel’. On a philosophical note, ‘being steel’ is a mindset of resilience, calling us to stand strong and develop our own Rock Steady Flow to take on the raging waters of today’s world. References to the Rock Steady breakdancing crew further reinforce this concept of ‘flow’ through its parallels to the rap flows of hip hop and the flow of the ocean.
